POST protects patients’ choices at the end of life
The Indiana Geriatrics Society has signed on as a supporter for HB 1114 – legislation supporting the implementation of POST – Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment. Promoted by the Indiana Patient Preferences Coalition, this legislation is sponsored by Representative Tim Brown, M.D.. The coalition is a group of diverse organizations supporting the implementation of POST in Indiana.
The POST movement was brought to Indiana by Susan Hickman, Ph.D., Associate Professor, IU School of Nursing. Ms. Hickman has evaluated the use of the POST program and her findings have been used by coalitions in several states to support the implementation of POST.
The goal of the POST program is to document treatment preferences as immediately actionable medical orders that are transportable across treatment settings.
