        IMDA 2012 Education Session

        TOPIC: Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment  (POST). 
        POST is a national movement to assist with patient's Advanced Directives and is locally being championed by Susan Hickman, PhD, Assoc Prof IU School of  Nursing and IU Medical Ethics.

        A discussion by special guest Charles Sabatino, JD, Director of American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging in Washington, D.C., on the POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) and other legal issues relevant to end-of-life care in Indiana.

        This speaking event is co-sponsored by the RESPECT (Research and Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training) Center at IUPUI, the Indiana Patient Preferences Coalition, and the IU School of Law Indianapolis Health Law Society.

        2011 UPDATE: Geriatric Interdisciplinary Best Practices

        The 2011 Update: Geriatric Interdisciplinary Best Practices conference is intended for physicians and non-physician interdisciplinary colleagues who provide medical care to elderly adults. This conference will update attendees on: innovations in making a difference in the quality of care for older adults; the impact of current issues in health care reform; and, state-of-the-art updates in diagnosis, treatment and management of a number of common health issues affecting the geriatric population.

        Topics will specifically include: how health care professionals can prevent elder financial fraud and investment exploitation; older adult care transitions with emergency medicine; Parkinson’s Disease; chronic pain therapy and addiction management; anti-coagulation therapy; geriatric drug updates; evaluation and management of delirium updates; background on development of the POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) in Indiana; Medicare reimbursement; and, current issues in healthcare reform.

        The Indiana Geriatrics Society (IGS) is a state affiliate of the American Geriatrics Society. The overall mission of IGS is to enhance the visibility of Geriatrics in Indiana. We hope to do this by providing local educational programs in geriatrics, promoting interdisciplinary care of older adults and providing input to the national organization on public policy issues.

        Annual IGS Dinner at AGS Conference - May 12, 2011

        Greetings! Our annual tradition of Indiana Dinner Night at the AGS conference will be on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 7:30pmat the Ketchup Restaurant near the Gaylord National Hotel at 152 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, MD 20745. 
        The cost for this self-pay dinner is 
        $57.00 which needs to be pre-paid to Kathy Frank, as she will handle the bill that night.  Sorry the cost is a bit higher this year, but the area is pricey.

        The menu is attached to the linked image. Dinner price will include appetizers with choice of soup or salad and includes your choice of entrée and a dessert.   
        Anyone ordering alcoholic beverages must pay for them separately.It will be a great evening!  Feel free to invite additional guests as we’ll have our own room.

This annual event provides an opportunity for IU Geriatrics to network with health care professionals from the state of Indiana and with former geriatrics faculty and fellows who continue to work in the geriatrics field.
